Visit With Lloyd and Sue - Tucson

  • In May of 2007 I was able to visit Tucson (Saddlebrooke) and had a great dinner with Lloyd Minney and his lovely wife Sue. They have lived here for many years now and believe it is living life at it's best. In 2004 they made a trip to South Africa to visit daughter Robin and her husband Rommell Roberts who make their home there - had a wonderful time. Lloyd is the son of Harriette Ramona (Brown) Minney and Edward Minney. From there he goes to Clara Edna (Noon) Brown, Edward Alonzo Noon and Adolphus Henry Noon. At the top is Robin and Rommell Roberts and below them are Lloyd and Sue.

The Great Adventure

In May I set out on my "great adventure" (as Dana calls these things) to see my (Montgomery) relatives in the Southeast - namely Louisiana and Mississippi with a stop in Houston to round it off. However, I also made a stop in Tubac, Arizona to visit John Egan and other members of the Noon/Slaughter Clan. John was kind enough to let me copy a lot of old photographs which came into his possession upon the death of his mother earlier this year. There were several of real interest including an early one taken in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, of Emma Slaughter - - to my knowledge the earliest known photo (of her); she was probably about 16 at the time. There was also one of Edward Slaughter (father of Emma) which I had never seen - still elderly but a good one for the collection. It is my guess it was taken about the same time, if not on the same day, as the one of his spouse, Catherine Cronk. There were also several unknowns and we all shall have to work on

these in the future.

As for the photos, the young lady at top is Emma Slaughter and was taken in Port Elizabeth, South Africa - - she looks to be to be about sixteen so would probably date to about 1860. On the left is Edward Slaughter and below John and myself standing outside his home in Tubac. I want to thank John for the opportunity to copy the old photos and documents - his patience and understanding with this project was just great.

Noon History Is Now a DVD

Due to amount of information gathered on the Noon and Slaughter Families it now requires a DVD rather than CD. This may be a problem for some with older computers as you may not have a DVD-Rom to read - a DVD unit will read a CD but a CD only will not read a DVD. The DVD is always available to family members and there is no charge, as such, for a DVD. There are two ways to obtain: (1) A self addressed, return envelope can be sent with correct postage attached. The envelope must contain a new disk and a case in good condition. The return package should be strong and sturdy to protect the disk, preferably a bubble package made for this purpose but there are other mailers which may serve. I will burn the disk and use the mailer to return to you. Or, (2) you can send me two dollars and I will send you a DVD - just make sure you give me a valid postal address. The money is to cover the expense of the materials and the postage - there is no profit in this effort and none is expected.

I am sure most all will enjoy the DVD and you might consider letting me know if you are interested. There are now over 2000 photos of the extended family so lots to peruse.

A New Noon!

I have been very remiss lately in not making postings in a timely manner so I must apologize for the long delay with this one. We have another new member for the Noon Clan and the name is Finnigan Roy Noon Smith, born 10 May 2007 (Mary Birch Women's Hospital, San Diego) to Doug and Meredith Smith at 11:21 AM, weighing in at nine pounds and 21 inches. He joins his older sister Murphy to complete the family. Finn's connection is through his mother, Meredith Davin (Noon) Smith, daughter of Donald Roy Noon and granddaughter of Roy Meredith Noon. From there we go to Roy Alonzo Noon, Alonzo Edward Noon and Adolphus Henry Noon. So, welcome Finn!!!!!!

Passing of William Dubart Marleau of San Diego

We are sad to report the death of William Dubart "Bill" Marleau at his home in San Diego on the 16th of February at the age of 89. He has not been in very good shape during the previous months so his passing was not a great shock to the family but nonetheless it was certainly a difficult time for all - he will be greatly missed. His passing leaves but one individual of that generation (descendants of Alonzo Edward Noon) and that is Margaret (Noon) Hines. Bill was cremated and his ashes were scattered off the San Diego coast.

His spouse, Dolores, passed away in June of 2005 and there is a 12 July 2005 entry if more info on the family is desired.

The photo was taken in France during WWII when Bill was serving on the staff of General Dwight Eisenhower.

His obituary appeared in San Diego Union Tribune on 22 February 2007, page B4:

"MARLEAU, WILLIAM D.
May 10,1917 to February 16, 2007
Bill was born and grew up in Los Angeles, California. He
attended UCLA and graduated in 1940 with a B.A. in economics.
While at UCLA he met his wife Dolores. They were married for
63 years. She preceded him in death.
In 1943 he was drafted and sent overseas to serve in the Army.
He was sent to London where he worked in General Elsenhower's
Supreme Hdqtrs. Bill also was assigned under General Bradley
during the Normandie Invasion.
In 1945, he came back to the U.S. with a Bronze Star. He got a job
at the Pacific Telephone Company. There was a maior move to San Diego in 1958.
By this time, there were three daughters, Pam, Wendy, and Petra. Bill retired from the telephone company after 35 years. Bill and Dolores square danced for 50 years, and also did a lot of traveling. The family had a favorite vacation spot - Yosemite National Park.
He is survived by his three daughters and their families. He was a wonderful caring and loving father. Donations may be made to San Diego Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Salvation Mountain

Dana and I just returned from a short (two day) trip to the desert. The primary reason was to make a visit to see "Salvation Mountain" in Nilan, California which is North of El Centro. This is folkart at it's best and I would recommend a visit if you ever have a chance. Leonard Knight began this project in 1983 and it has evolved over the years as a monument to his intimate relationship with his God. Leonard is now 75 and is not as active as he used to be early on. There is still a lot of construction to be done and one would have to have doubts that it will ever be completed. Regardless, it is well worth a visit.

Basically there are two segments which are actually two separate projects. The one to the left is the original and can be climbed via steps to the top. However, be forewarned that this is not all that easy for someone who may have knee problems, such as myself. It can also be a bit dangerous as the steps are ill defined and a misstep would be easy - - it is a long way to the bottom of the "mountain".

The other segment is intended to be a building and is quite amazing. Leonard uses mostly items which he has been able to gather from the desert over the years. These are then incorporated into the structure with various retaining devices and a liberal use of adobe which he mixes on site. He also uses old tires, many hay bales, telephone poles, dead trees etc. People used to bring paint when they made a visit but he now prefers a small donation to the effort. The whole area is open for exploring so take your time to enjoy.

He has received many awards for this work and this is one he actually framed into the building. There is a coffee table book published by Leaf and would be a good way to get a handle on the entire project.

Dana and I with Leonard (and our dog Georgie) in the "building" project. You will see many "flowers" all over both efforts and he makes these by throwing a hunk of wet adobe on the wall and then hits it with his fist. He really likes to do this so there are many, many flowers made in this manner. Leonard also likes to talk and will give you a guided tour if he is available. Take one if you can as well worth the insight into this remarkable individual and his project.

Dana at the top of Salvation Mountain. There are a couple of ways to get to the top so pick the safest one for yourself.

This "Temple to God" is now considered a primary California attraction and should be seen. However, I would not delay long. As I said Leonard is now seventy five and is doing this on property owned by the state - - what the furture holds is unknown but it should come as no surprise it may disappear altogether. It is my understanding there might well be pending legislation which will designate it as a National Historic Site which will give it some status for preservation funds, etc. Let's all hope this comes about as it would be a terrible waste let it go.......................

Here is a current photo of Ty Daniel Helie born 7 July 2006. Proud parents are Leila Jean McCarty and Mark Eric Helie. The couple makes their home in Redlands, California and Ty was born in the Riverside Community Hospital, the same hospital where his father Mark was born. Leila is working with a Veterinarian and Mark is a general contaractor. These photos were taken on Thanksgiving day at the home of Tom and Dana Montgomery who hosted family members for the annual feast. For more information you might wish to revisit the 15 July 2006 blog entry which gives a bit more detail.

Merry Christmas

Dana and I wish all a very, very Merry Christmas and a great New Year.

(Note that the date on the photo is very incorrect, should read 2 December 2006. Appears the individual taking the pictures had little knowledge about the camera and was not really interested in learning. Oh well...............)
